GEORGE BENSON SINGS FOR PRIDE!
The legendary jazz superstar was in Kuala Terengganu recently to perform at the PRIDE-Monsoon Cup Charity Gala Dinner.
This year, for the first time, the PRIDE Foundation collaborated with organizers of The Monsoon Cup to host its annual charity gala dinner. The Monsoon Cup is part of the prestigious World Match Racing Tour international sailing circuit, a competition which attracts the world's top ranked sailors annually to this part of the world.
The Charity Gala Dinner was held at the Heritage Bay Club in Pulau Duyung, the night before The Monsoon Cup 2006 Finals. This by-invitation-only Charity Gala Dinner was officiated by the Prime Minister, Y.A.B. Dato' Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and attended by over 500 people, including the world's best sailors, members of the royalty, Cabinet Ministers, local and international celebrities, as well as prominent society members and business leaders.
The gala evening's programme included a poetry recital by National Laureate, Datuk Dr A. Samad Said. "Reben Syahdu, Merah Jambu" was written by Datuk Said as a message of hope and life after breast cancer. It was such a moving tribute to breast cancer survivors and their courage in battling the disease that some in the audience were left with tears in their eyes.
The highlight of the evening was a performance by American jazz and R&B legend, the iconic George Benson. Winner of eight Grammy Awards, Benson thrilled the audience with his classic numbers including "Give Me the Night", "Kisses in the Moonlight", "This Masquerade" and "Nothing's Gonna Change My For You", just to name a few.
Benson enchanted the audience with his youthful and powerful vocals, which is still remarkably untouched by his 65 years of age. He proved that he hasn't lost any of his talent and appeal as he got most of the audience excited and on their feet to dance to his music.
Proceeds to the PRIDE-Monsoon Cup Charity Gala Dinner Fund will be channelled to PRIDE Foundation and two Terengganu charities - Yayasan Diraja Sultan Mizan and Tabung Darul Iman. Both charitable organizations are committed to the socio-economic welfare of the people of Terengganu.
