CLIMB WITH PRIDE-ACONCAGUA 2007
Breast cancer survivor, Rene'e Aziz Ahmad, scales new heights in Argentina for breast cancer awareness!
Climbing a mountain is symbolic of the trials breast cancer sufferers face in overcoming their illness. Both require immense reserves of resilience, courage and determination.
Hence, in celebration of the physical and emotional fortitude necessary to conquer the challenges in surviving breast cancer, PRIDE Foundation (Pink Ribbon Deeds) launched the Climb with PRIDE-Aconcagua 2007, an expedition to the highest mountain in the Western and Southern Hemispheres in Argentina. This remarkable journey to the summit of one of the world's great peaks will be led by breast cancer survivor, Rene'e Aziz Ahmad.
Through Climb with PRIDE-Aconcagua 2007, PRIDE aims to impart a message of hope and inspiration to breast cancer sufferers and survivors. In addition, it is anticipated that the publicity generated by this ascent will enhance community awareness and support for breast cancer causes.
"Above and beyond our objective of promoting breast cancer awareness, this expedition will also be conveying a strong message of inspiration to breast cancer patients and survivors to embrace life and stay positive," said Datin Azrene Abdullah, Chairman of PRIDE.
Rene'e Aziz Ahmad, 45, a breast cancer survivor since 2001, is an avid trekker. One her most recent accomplishments - scaling the challenging Mount Kilimanjaro last year - was such an overwhelmingly positive experience that she has decided to take on Mount Aconcagua.
"Once I reached the Uhuru Peak at the summit of Mount Kilamanjaro, the whole journey, although difficult, seemed all worthwhile. I was overcome by a profound sense of accomplishment. I felt that I could do anything if I tried hard enough!" said Rene'e.
"Through my participation in the Climb with PRIDE-Aconcagua expedition, I hope to show people that breast cancer doesn't have to stop women from living life to the fullest or from taking on new challenges! It's a personal story I want to share with other survivors, so as to inspire them to go beyond their illness and be excited about life again," Rene'e added.
The 26-day expedition at Mount Aconcagua, from 14 January to 9 February 2007, is also not a walk in the park. Climbers are expected to face challenges such as extreme weather, stormy winds and high altitude sickness, making Mount Aconcagua a serious undertaking.
In preparation for the climb, Rene'e and her other 4 team members have to go through a rigorous training schedule, including a 9D8N training at Trans Titiwangsa and 6D5N at Mount Kinabalu, as physical fitness and mental strength are crucial for the climb.
