CLIMB WITH PRIDE-ACONCAGUA 2007

Updates from the team in Argentina

The spirits are high as ever
25 January, 2007

Although it was a major setback that not all of the team will proceed to the High Camp and then attempt to reach the summit, Rene’e and her team were in pretty good spirits. When PRIDE spoke to Rene’e two days ago, she was already making plans for the next week ahead.

The whole team was at the Base Camp for another day yesterday, so for the last two days, since Tuesday, both Stephanie and Zabil had an additional rest day before they continued their journey to the summit. They had decided that, since there were only 2 climbers ascending and they have two porters with them, they could afford one more rest day at the Base Camp.

The team had even organized a small ceremony at the Base Camp to mark the handing over of the PRIDE banner and the Malaysian, from Rene’e to Zabil and Stephanie. “We kind of officially handed over to them and hopefully they will carry it all the way to the summit for us!” said Rene’e.

Today, Stephanie and Zabil started their hike up to the High Camp again at about 10:30 in the morning, together with two guides, Andreas and Laura. The third guide, Carlos, will be staying with Rene’e, Shereen and Harun and descend with them to Penitentes tomorrow, a journey which will take them two days from the Base Camp.

As for Kabie, he had been unwell since he returned from High Camp One three days ago, mainly caused by a combination of high altitude-induced dehydration and loss of appetite. So yesterday, they got Kabie on a horseback, and he was accompanied by the gauchos who will make sure he gets down safely to Penitentes within a day.

“Right now, I’m not sure, because we are not in contact with Kabie at the moment, but he should be fine,” said Rene’e. “When we are back in Penitentes, we’ll be resting for one day and then, on the following day, we will head out to Confluencia. We will probably spend a couple of days there, and meet Stephanie and Zabil when they come out.”

It would be a day trek from Penitentes to Consluencia. Rene’e and the team plan to camp at Confluencia,  “and if the timing is good and we have good weather, they don’t have to wait so long at the high camp before they summit, then we shouldn’t have to wait more than a day or two,” she added.

PRIDE also managed to speak to Shereen, who said she was doing well and despite the cold weather, she had the chance to frolic in a bit of snow. “We do hope the others are doing better with the weather, and I hope the weather gets better higher up. For the past two days here, it was really sunny. We had some occasional strong winds, but nothing bad,” she told PRIDE.
