CLIMB WITH PRIDE-ACONCAGUA 2007

Updates from the team in Argentina

Day Two at Aconcagua
19 January, 2007

The team left the Base Camp 1 at 9.45am this morning. It was a challenging hike - as they not only walked for more than seven hours to reach Base Camp 2 and 300m further up in elevation, the wind was blowing strongly and it was cold. The climbers also had to endure a fleeting dust and sand storm for just about one minute, half an hour before they reached Camp 2 at 4:30pm.

During the trek, the team members once again saw the mountain they plan to conquer at a more up-close view. The awe-inspiring Mount Aconcagua was humbling, and Sheeren described it as looking "beautiful" as well as "really, really, really scary" over the phone. It is, indeed, a very imposing sight.

The team had to ascend slowly to acclimatize to the high altitude. Tomorrow will be an even greater challenge - they have to climb a further 1000m. All of the team members were fine except Harun, who was suffering from a minor headache.

After a hard day of climbing, the team members feasted on a slice of home - simple yet satisfying. Rice, their first serving since departing Kuala Lumpur and one of the all-time Malaysian favourites - sambal ikan bilis - which was shared in true team spirit by Kabie. Rice and sambal ikan bilis probably never tasted this good to them!

After dinner, they had a little chat and hot drink. And then, it's lights out as they hit their sleeping bags. More uphill climb tomorrow, but it's all good now!

[As the phone conversation recorded today was unclear, we will not be uploading the sound clip. We apologize for this.]
