A TIME TO BOND WITH PRIDE
PRIDE’s empowerment programme for breast cancer patients and survivors kicks off

June 15, 2007

PRIDE Foundation today launched the Bond with PRIDE programme at the JW Marriott Hotel. As part of PRIDE’s continuing efforts to empower breast cancer patients and survivors, the event saw participants, sponsors and supporters of PRIDE gather at the Mayang Sari Grand Ballroom to witness the launch of BOND with PRIDE 2007. The event was graced and officiated by Her Majesty The Raja Permaisuri Agong Tuanku Nur Zahirah, who also cut a ribbon to declare open an exhibition on PRIDE and breast cancer.

In this year’s programme, aptly named Bond with PRIDE, about 100 breast cancer patients and survivors from four government hospitals and several non-government cancer organizations will be sponsored by individual donors to participate in the programme. This three-month long programme consists of spa treatments, two wellness workshops and a book launch.

“Bond with PRIDE is a very special project because it addresses two of PRIDE’s objectives in one single programme. Firstly, breast cancer awareness for members of the public - because we believe ‘early detection saves lives’. Secondly, to empower the breast cancer patients through our Feel Good Projects -- to relay the message that, there is life after breast cancer,” explained Datin Azrene Abdullah, Chairman of PRIDE.

The programme starts off with a day at the spa, whereby all participants will be treated to a selection of spa therapies. During the spa sessions, breast cancer patients and survivors will be accompanied by the individual women donors. This is done to facilitate a platform for the bonding and sharing of personal experiences between the patients, survivors and donors. By creating an avenue for participants to express themselves, PRIDE aspires to increase awareness, empathy and understanding of the challenges faced by these patients and survivors.

“Bond with PRIDE matches donors with a breast cancer patient buddy for a day at the spa - for a “feel good” pampering session to enhance wellness – of the mind, of the body and of the spirit,” Datin Azrene added.

Two wellness workshops have also been planned for the programme, which will encompass topics by experts in their field of nutrition, fitness, motivation, beauty, and financial planning. Through these workshops, PRIDE hopes to provide the patients and survivors with practical knowledge and insights on how they can best deal with breast cancer and face challenges in life with more confidence.

At the end of the programme, a book on Bond with PRIDE will be published to capture the personal experiences of the participants during their Bond with PRIDE journey. Each of these journeys will be documented as stories of inspiration, especially to those whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. In addition, PRIDE hopes that the book will further contribute to enhancing community awareness and empathy on breast cancer issues.

Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah, Head of the Department of Breast, Endocrine and General Surgery at the Putrajaya Hospital, is delighted that the patients under his care are able to join this programme. “It is a beneficial programme for them to be part of – I believe that it would help encourage them to fight their disease with a more positive attitude and that it should revitalize them with renewed optimism and confidence,” said Dr Hisham, who is also the Medical Advisor for PRIDE.

As a whole, the programme hopes that those suffering from breast cancer will be inspired to appreciate and accentuate the positive things in their lives, as well as to convey an empowering message that yes, there is life after breast cancer! The Bond with PRIDE programme is made possible by Main Partners, Noah Foundation and Jasa Kita Berhad as well as Spa Partner, Energy Day Spa.
